Originally born in Rochester, Minnesota, 18-year old Denim Nicole was raised all-over in cities like Queens, Brooklyn, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Chicago–where she was introduced to a family friend linked to the music industry whom she thought would take her to the top. What she didn’t know was that she was about to endure hard lessons in the entertainment industry.
Denim wrote her first song when she was only 11 years old called “Done with these bullies” which was about her experience getting bullied in elementary school. Her songwriting skills impressed her family friend so much that he introduced her to Chicago producers Donn Robb, OzOnTheTrack, & MikeWavvs who’ve worked with artist Juice WRLD, The Kid Laroi, Gherbo, and more. After moving to LA in 2015, Denim recorded her first unreleased single “Gotta Move It”. “Gotta Move It”is a pop song that will make you move around even if you aren’t a dancer.
While living in LA, Denim continued to record her music and devote more time for her acting career, she has a list of over 15 performances and credits to her name including playing a principal role in Mac Miller’s “100 Grandkids,” playing Jean in a television pilot by Mi Casa Mi Casa Productions, playing the role of the Sultan in Jaxx Theatricals “Aladdin.”, Tessie in the musical “Annie”, and more. While living in a 2-bedroom apartment living room with the Chicago producers and siblings, she began recording her music. Denim laughs that although she “hated cleaning the bathroom after everyone showered, we created some of the best music at this time.Which is also when she noticed her brother and producer SpaceKillem taking more of an interest in making beats. Space and Denim began making music together and while he drove her to school in the morning he would play his beats for Denim to help develop her sound as an artist.
In 2018, Denim would finally get the opportunity to release her song “Lemonade” produced by Mike Wavvs. Lemonade was Denim’s way of making lemons into lemonade, a classy yet catchy way to tell the haters she will continue to rise above the hate and succeed. Denim emphasized “It was like a rollercoaster, you’re heading up towards the drop but when it drops it felt like a never ending loop”. After she dropped her first hit “Lemonade” the music video was previewed on BET Jams, and has over 80k on Youtube. There was talk about a possible EP release but her family friend never fulfilled their promise, shortly after the Lemonade video stopped from rotating on BET Jams and all of Denim’s masters were kept from her by the family friend. After years of frustration and hurt by the betrayal of her family friend, Denim decided she would no longer watch her music be taken away from her and she would fight back.
Denim would then create her first come-back song titled “Retali8” with her brother SpaceKillem and create her own label “Retali8 Records”. While “Retali8” will be a future release, Denim and Space continue working to create new masters of her music and re-recorded “Goku”, “I Know”, and “Wasted”. Denim says “My resilience and strong backbone comes from the one who makes it all happen, my mom”. Denim’s momanger, Laquesha, is Denim’s right hand and has shown that all things can be done through faith and hard work. “She(Denim) has always performed whether it be singing or dancing for her family and friends,” said Laquesha Nance, Denim Nicole’s mom. “She's always shown her creativeness whether it was being on stage, behind the camera, through her songs, or editing and I can’t wait for the world to see what Denim Nicole has in store” says Laquesha.
In addition to “Goku”, “Wasted’, and “I Know”, Denim has created a new song titled “In The Dark”with charting producer OzOnTheTrack. All of these songs are out on all streaming platforms, and Denim will be making her debut as an independent artist performing at LiveNation’s festival. When it comes to Denim’s sound she says “I hate being stuck in a box or specific genre, the beautiful thing about music is there's so much versatility and always something new for me to learn to do with my voice or lyrics so my listeners should never get too comfortable in any particular sound from me”. She does not only feel like this about her music, but in her education as well. In the Fall of 2022, she will be majoring in Mass Media Arts with a concentration in TV/Film and Minor in music at Clark Atlanta. She aspires to be able to communicate to her future Music Engineers and Music Video crew in a clear manner, she is inspired by artist like Missy Elliot, Micheal Jackson, Beyonce, Teyanna Taylor, and director Issa Rae for their ability to make their visions come to life artistically and very soon she will be doing just that.
